Botulinum toxin injection (Botox, Dysport)

What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used in very small, controlled doses for medical and cosmetic purposes. The toxin works by preventing nerve signals from reaching muscles, which temporarily weakens or paralyzes the targeted muscles.
Common Brands of Botulinum Toxin

- Botox – The most well-known brand, often used for both cosmetic and medical purposes.
- Dysport – Similar to Botox but with a slightly different formulation, has a quicker onset and may spread a bit more uniformly after injection.
- There are other newer botulinum toxins available which are not as well established.

Common Cosmetic Treatments with Botulinum Toxin

Wrinkle Reduction
- Forehead lines – Horizontal lines that form when raising the eyebrows.
- Frown lines – Vertical lines between the eyebrows (also called “11s”).
- Crow’s feet – Fine lines around the outer corners of the eyes.
- Bunny lines – Lines on the nose that appear when you wrinkle it.
- Marionette lines – Lines around the mouth or jaw that may make one look unhappy or older.
- Eyebrow Lift – Botox can be injected into the muscles around the eyebrows to give a subtle lift, improving the appearance of sagging brows.
- Neck Bands – Botox can be used to treat visible neck bands by relaxing the platysma muscle.
Medical Treatments with Botulinum Toxin

- Chronic Migraines – Botox is FDA-approved for treating chronic migraines by blocking pain signals and reducing headache frequency.
- Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) – Botox can temporarily block the sweat glands, helping to reduce excessive sweating in areas like the armpits, hands, feet, or face.
- TMJ Disorders and Teeth Grinding – Injections can help relax the muscles involved in jaw clenching and teeth grinding, reducing pain and discomfort.
- Overactive Bladder – Botulinum toxin injections into the bladder can help treat urinary incontinence caused by overactive bladder muscles.
- Strabismus (Crossed Eyes) – Botox can be used to correct the misalignment of the eyes.
- Cervical Dystonia (Neck Spasms) – Injections can relieve abnormal neck muscle contractions, reducing pain and improving posture.

How the Treatment Works
- Consultation –A healthcare provider (usually a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or other trained professional) assesses the areas of concern and discusses the treatment goals.
- Injection – The provider injects small amounts of botulinum toxin into the targeted muscles using a fine needle. The number of injections depends on the area being treated.
- Post-Treatment Care – There’s typically little to no downtime. Patients may be advised to avoid rubbing the treated areas or lying down for a few hours after the procedure.
- Results – Effects generally begin to show within 3-7 days, with full results visible in about 2 weeks. The effects can last 3-6 months, after which additional treatments are needed to maintain results.
