Warts / Molluscom

Warts and Molluscum contagiosum are both common skin conditions caused by viral infections, but they differ in their appearance, symptoms, and the viruses responsible.

Definitions

warts

Warts are typically caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which infects the skin and causes abnormal cell growth. Warts can appear anywhere on the body, commonly on the hands, feet, and face, and they often have a rough, raised appearance. They may be skin-colored or darker and can be painful if located on pressure points, such as the soles of the feet.

Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum, on the other hand, is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) and results in small, smooth, dome-shaped lesions with a central dimple. These bumps usually appear on the face, arms, and torso, particularly in children, but adults can also develop them, especially if they are sexually active.

highly contagious

Both warts and molluscum contagiosum are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with an infected individual or by touching contaminated surfaces. Warts are often spread through minor cuts or abrasions, while molluscum contagiosum spreads through skin-to-skin contact or shared items, such as towels. Although these conditions are usually benign and not life-threatening, they can be unsightly, cause discomfort, and lead to emotional distress due to their appearance. In many cases, warts and molluscum contagiosum may resolve on their own over time, but they can persist for weeks, months, or even years without treatment.

Treatments

Treatment options for warts and molluscum contagiosum vary depending on the type and location of the lesions. For warts, we may offer treatments such as cryotherapy (freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen), laser therapy, or topical medications like salicylic acid to dissolve the wart tissue. For molluscum contagiosum, treatments might include topical therapies (such as imiquimod or tretinoin), cryotherapy, or minor surgical removal of the lesions. We can also offer guidance on proper care to avoid spreading the virus to other parts of the body or to other people. In cases where the patient has a weakened immune system, such as with HIV or other immune disorders, dermatologists may offer more aggressive treatments to prevent complications.

Preventing Scarring or Secondary Infections

Lastly, seeing us is essential to prevent scarring or secondary infections. While both warts and molluscum contagiosum are typically harmless, they can cause permanent scarring if not treated properly or if the lesions are picked or scratched. In some cases, an untreated wart may grow larger or spread, causing more extensive damage to the skin. Molluscum contagiosum can also become infected, leading to redness, swelling, and pus. We can provide treatment to reduce these risks and help patients manage their condition effectively. Regular follow-up visits may be necessary to monitor progress and ensure that the lesions are completely resolved.

Why choose Aesthetic Dermatology

Contacting us here at Aesthetic Dermatology is important for several reasons, especially if warts or molluscum contagiosum become widespread, painful, or persistent. We are trained to accurately diagnose these conditions and distinguish them from other skin disorders with similar symptoms. In some cases, what appears to be a wart or molluscum may be another type of skin lesion, which could require different treatment. We will also assess the severity of the condition, determine whether it is spreading, and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
